The Mississippi River is at its highest level since construction began just over one year ago.  While rising waters have inhibited progress on the levee work, crews continue to install reinforcing steel on the Unit 2 deck in preparation of placing the deck there later this month.  Another project milestone will be celebrated this month as the final six segments of structural steel will set, completing all the work on the bridge substructure.  At this time, rising waters are not expected to cause U.S. Route 54 closed at the levee on the Illinois side of the bridge, but that could change depending on the weather.  The last time the bridge was closed due to flooding was in June 2014.

The Champ Clark Bridge team is active in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) school programs throughout the region.  Ed Harris, project engineer with Massman Construction, is pictured above at Pittsfield, IL High School.  He explained the different types of bridges to students and reading construction plans.  Four presentations were made at Hannibal High School on the same topic, and another is scheduled for Louisiana High School later this month.

High water is encroaching under Unit 2 on the Illinois bank. If you look closely, you can see the dock on the left where crews were loading and unloading items off the bank.

Equipment moved due to flooding

High water forced Massman Construction to relocate much of their equipment to higher ground behind the project office.
